Bien que leurs chemins se soient croisés régulièrement, les métiers d’aide au couple et à la famille ont des structurations professionnelles différentes. Le conseil conjugal et familial, la médiation familiale ou encore la thérapie conjugale et familiale, qui n’entrent pas nécessairement en contact avec les individus, les couples et les familles de la même manière, sont soumis à des tensions externes et internes révélatrices des rapports contemporains entre institutions et familles. Dans le présent article exploratoire, l’auteur, sociologue, propose de dessiner (...) les frontières interprofessionnelles de ces métiers, pouvant être envisagés comme des supports thérapeutiques ou d’autonomisation, mais aussi comme composant de manière hétéroclite, voire contradictoire, une police des familles, faisant office d’entrepreneurs d’un nouvel ordre normatif familial, entre collaboration et douce imposition. Si l'esprit est ce qui ne cesse de s'opposer a la nature au point d'eprouver spontanement son originaire et paradoxale affinite avec le surnaturel, d'ou vient qu'il y ait de l'esprit dans la nature? Par ailleurs, comment l'esprit peut-il etre trascendant a la nature, alors que la nature est de part en part immanente a l'esprit? Bref, quel est le statut de la negativite? Pour tenter de repondre a ces questions, ce livre developpe une phenomenologie du desir et une ontologie (...) du temps. En analysant cette fonction hypostasiante qui fait du platonisme une attitude spontanee de toute conscience, la presente etude en caracterise l'origine dans le langage, dont l'effet le plus remarquable lui parait consister dans l'aptitude bien moins a designer ce qui est qu'a faire etre ce qu'il dit. Le sentiment que j'ai de moi-meme a-t-il rien de commun avec la perception que les autres ont de moi? Et ce corps, qui me precede toujours, que dit-il a autrui de ma vraie nature, de mes gouts, de mon etre secret? Ainsi, aussi inseparable que je sois de mon apparence, celle-ci signale immanquablement celui que je ne suis pas tout a fait. En d'autres termes: mon corps est-il l'expression de mon moi ou mon moi est-il le prisonnier clandestin de mon (...) corps? Entre moi et ce qui est mien, la relation est donc bien moins d'ordre ontologique que linguistique ou stylistique. C'est ce qui fait du snobisme ou du dandysme deux figures de cet effort que chacun entreprend pour tenter de paraitre ce qu'il voudrait etre, et pour tenter d'affacer ce qui volontairement sien. N. François Jacob, biologiste français et Prix Nobel, a souligné dans les années 1970 que les sciences, les technologies et leur cortège expérimental font intervenir " un jeu des possibles " et constituent pour cette raison " une machine à fabriquer de l'avenir ". Autrement dit, les activités scientifiques, médicales ou encore artistiques exigent que soient instaurés des dispositifs qui à la fois concrétisent et contrôlent la génération de connaissances nouvelles et de pratiques originales. Ce livre vise à explorer les articulations (...) multiples entre les activités créatives et leurs limites constitutives. Les articles posent la question des limites de la créativité à partir de perspectives philosophiques et sociologiques tout en se référant à des études de cas qui sont à l'interface entre sciences, arts et normes sociotechniques. Le livre est le résultat d'une recherche sur la créativité menée à l'IRIST (Institut de Recherches Interdisciplinaires sur les Sciences et la Technologie) à l'Université de Strasbourg. (shrink)

Même si l’on connaît surtout Ecce homo, l’une de ses dernières œuvres, dans laquelle Nietzsche nous livre une véritable autobiographie intellectuelle, le philosophe allemand s’est en réalité très tôt plu à la pratique de l’autobiographie. L’autoréflexion qu’il présente de son devenir fut ensuite une constante, notamment dans les Préfaces qu’il ajouta par la suite à ses plus fameux ouvrages. Mais cette constante est d’autant plus étonnante chez un auteur qui dit d’une part ne s’être jamais que médiocrement réfléchi, et d’autre (...) part qu’il ne faut pas soupçonner le moins du monde qui l’on est pour être en mesure de devenir soi. Nous tâchons ici de dépasser cette contradiction apparente en proposant une interprétation de ce geste nietzschéen de l’autobiographie et nous nous demandons en même temps si cette pratique ne constitue et ne construit pas davantage le soi à un moment donné, peut-être même à titre d’illusion, plutôt qu’elle ne le saisit véritablement. La phénoménologie vise à décrire les choses mêmes telles qu'elles se donnent à la conscience, sans y ajouter des éléments tirés d'héritages métaphysiques ou d'interprétations traditionnelles. Mais à cette fin, elle doit élucider le langage dans lequel elle tend à réaliser ce programme. Ce langage peut-il consister en une expression 'pure,' spontanée, ou doit-il se démarquer des usages quotidiens? N'est-il pas nécessairement marqué par une histoire, et n'obéit-il pas, qu'il le veuille ou non, à une rhétorique? Ne reconnaît-on d'ailleurs pas (...) la phénoménologie à un certain style? De telles questions n'ont été ignorées ni par Husserl, ni par Heidegger, ni par Merleau-Ponty, ni par Ricoeur, ni par Hans Blumenberg, ni par Marc Richir--autant d'auteurs ici étudiés pour les réponses très variées qu'ils y ont apportées, pour la façon dont ils ont thématisé le rapport de la philosophie à son médium linguistique et au langage ordinaire, les modalités de la description, l'histoire de la rhétorique ou encore les apports possibles de la littérature (Goethe, Claude Simon...), de l'herméneutique, de la linguistique (Jakobson) et de l'art en général. Cet article propose une confrontation inédite entre les dispositifs théoriques de deux philosophes contemporains, Renaud Barbaras et Nicolas Grimaldi, que l’auteur envisage en tant qu’ontologies de la vie. La singularité, dans le champ philosophique, de leur conception du désir conduit à un rapprochement, en dépit d’une différence dans les références philosophiques mobilisées. Le sujet vivant est en effet pensé par tous deux comme « désir », et il est par là interprété comme un certain manque, bien que celui-ci ne (...) soit relatif à aucun objet ni, plus généralement, à rien qui se donne sur le mode de l’objet. Or, les options philosophiques de Barbaras et de Grimaldi divergent néanmoins quant à la réponse apportée au problème de l’articulation entre vie et désir, et plus précisément quant au sens accordé à la négativité. Alors que le premier envisage les êtres vivants à partir d’une négation-privation qui affecte l’archi-vie du monde sans avoir sa source en elle, le second comprend la vie, sous toutes ses modalités, à partir d’une négativité qui lui est intrinsèque. Autrement dit, si, pour Grimaldi, la vie est essentiellement désir, pour Barbaras le désir caractérise seulement la modalité d’être des vivants, non l’archi-vie du monde. Il en découle des différences importantes quant au statut de la temporalité et de l’affectivité chez les deux philosophes. C’est, d’après l’auteur, dans le sort que chacun réserve à l’hypothèse finaliste — écartée par Barbaras; étayée sur une analyse de la notion de tendance chez Grimaldi — que le différend philosophique prend sa source. In dit klassieke essay van de grote kunshistoricus Erwin Panfosky komt vast te staan dat het zinnetje ‘Et in Arcadia ego’, van oudsher te vinden op kunstwerken en in verhalen die Arcadië als thema hebben, tegenwoordig een andere betekenis krijgt dan vroeger. Waar wij het simpelweg vertalen als ‘Ook ik was in Arcadië’, een vertaling die past bij ons beeld van een idyllisch, pastoraal landschap, had het oorspronkelijk een veel minder onschuldige lading. Overtuigend toont Panofsky aan, door te verwijzen naar (...) onder meer Vergilius, Sannazaro en Guercino, dat de ‘ik’ die in het citaat spreekt niemand minder is dan de Dood. De juiste vertaling is dan het sinistere, moralistische ‘Ook in Arcadië heers ik, de Dood’: de Arcadiërs wordt gemaand hun sterven te gedenken. Panofsky maakt duidelijk dat de foutieve interpretatie, met alle gevolgen van dien voor het arcadisch thema, zijn oorsprong heeft bij Nicolas Poussins beroemde Et in Arcadia Ego-composities. Zijn essay maakt dat het lieflijke arcadische landschap alsnog zijn onschuld verliest, en dat ook voor ons de dood opnieuw tot Arcadië toetreedt. (shrink)

Adult stem cell populations must coordinate their own maintenance with the generation of differentiated cell types to sustain organ physiology, in a spatially controlled manner and over long periods. Quantitative analyses of clonal dynamics have revealed that, in epithelia, homeostasis is achieved at the population rather than at the single stem cell level, suggesting that feedback mechanisms coordinate stem cell maintenance and progeny generation. In the central nervous system, however, little is known of the possible community processes underlying neural stem (...) cell maintenance. Recent work, in part based on intravital imaging made possible in the adult zebrafish, conclusively highlights that homeostasis in neural stem cell pools may rely on population asymmetry and long‐term spatiotemporal coordination of neural stem cell states and fates. These results suggest that neural stem cell assemblies in the vertebrate brain behave as self‐organized systems, such that the stem cells themselves generate their own intrinsic niche. (shrink)

The belief that the spirits of the dead can return to haunt the living exists either as a tenet or as a marginal conviction in all civilizations, whether ancient or modern. More often than not, the dead do not return to reunite the living with their loved ones but rather to lead them into some dreadful snare, entrapping them with disastrous consequences. To be sure, all the departed may return, but some are predestined to haunt: the dead who have been (...) shamed during their lifetime or those who took unspeakable secrets to the grave. From the brucolacs, the errant sprits of outcasts in ancient Greece, to the ghost of Hamlet’s vengeful father, and on down to the rapping spirits of modern times, the theme of the dead—who, having suffered repression by their family or society, cannot enjoy, even in death, a state of authenticity—appears to be omnipresent on the fringes of religions and, failing that, in rational systems. It is a fact that the “phantom,” whatever its form, is nothing but an invention of the living. Yes, an invention in the sense that the phantom is meant to objectify, even if under the guise of individual or collective hallucinations, the gap that the concealment of some part of a loved one’s life produced in us. The phantom is, therefore, also a metapsychological fact. Consequently, what haunts are not the dead, but the gaps left within us by the secrets of others.Because the phantom is not related to the loss of a loved one, it cannot be considered the effect of unsuccessful mourning, as is the case of melancholics or of all those who carry a tomb within themselves. It is the children’s or descendants’ lot to objectify these buried tombs through diverse species of ghosts. What comes back to haunt are the tombs of others. The phantoms of folklore merely objectify a metaphor active within the unconscious: the burial of an unspeakable fact within the loved one.Here we are in the midst of clinical psychoanalysis and still shrouded in obscurity, an obscurity, however, that the nocturnal being of phantoms can, paradoxically, be called upon to clarify. In order to describe the logic of morality, "contractualist" philosophers have studied how individuals behave when they choose to follow their moral intuitions. These individuals, contractualists note, often act as if they have bargained and thus reached an agreement with others about how to distribute the benefits and burdens of mutual cooperation. Using this observation, such philosophers argue that the purpose of morality is to maximize the benefits of human interaction. The resulting "contract" analogy is both insightful and puzzling. On (...) one hand, it captures the pattern of moral intuitions, thus answering questions about human cooperation: why do humans cooperate? Why should the distribution of benefits be proportionate to each person's contribution? Why should the punishment be proportionate to the crime? Why should the rights be proportionate to the duties? On the other hand, the analogy provides a mere as-if explanation for human cooperation, saying that cooperation is "as if" people have passed a contract-but since they didn't, why should it be so? To evolutionary thinkers, the puzzle of the missing contract is immediately reminiscent of the puzzle of the missing "designer" of life-forms, a puzzle that Darwin's theory of natural selection essentially resolved. Evolutionary and contractualist theory originally intersected at the work of philosophers John Rawls and David Gauthier, who argued that moral judgments are based on a sense of fairness that has been naturally selected. In this book, Nicolas Baumard further explores the theory that morality was originally an adaptation to the biological market of cooperation, an arena in which individuals competed to be selected for cooperative interactions. In this environment, Baumard suggests, the best strategy was to treat others with impartiality and to share the costs and benefits of cooperation in a fair way, so that those who offered less than others were left out of cooperation while those who offered more were exploited by their partners. It is with this evolutionary approach that Baumard ultimately accounts for the specific structure of human morality. (shrink)

In Study 1, we examined the moderating impact of alexithymia (i.e., a difficulty identifying and describing feelings to other people and an externally oriented cognitive style) on the automatic processing of affective information. The affective priming paradigm was used, and lower priming effects for high alexithymia scorers were observed when congruent (incongruent) pairs involving nonverbal primes (angry face) and verbal target were presented. The results held after controlling for participants' negative affectivity. The same effects were replicated in Studies 2 and (...) 3, with trait anxiety and depression entered as additional covariates. In Study 3, no moderating impact of alexithymia was found for verbal-facial pairs suggesting that the results cannot be merely explained in terms of transcoding limitations for high alexithymia scorers. Overall, the present results suggest that alexithymia could be related to a difficulty in processing and automatically using high arousal emotional information to respond to concomittant behavioural demands. I offer a Buddhist-inspired account of how patience can count as a moral virtue, arguing that virtuous patience involves having a perspective on the place of our own desires and values among others and a sense of their relative importance.

To explain agent-identification behaviours, universalist theories in the biological and cognitive sciences have posited mental mechanisms thought to be universal to all humans, such as agent detection and face recognition mechanisms. These universalist theories have paid little attention to how particular sociocultural or historical contexts interact with the psychobiological processes of agent-identification. In contrast to universalist theories, contextualist theories appeal to particular historical and sociocultural contexts for explaining agent-identification. Contextualist theories tend to adopt idiographic methods aimed at recording the heterogeneity (...) of human behaviours across history, space, and cultures. Defenders of the universalist approach tend to criticise idiographic methods because such methods can lead to relativism or may lack generality. To overcome explanatory limitations of proposals that adopt either universalist or contextualist approaches in isolation, I propose a philosophical model that integrates contributions from both traditions: the psycho-historical theory of agent-identification. This theory investigates how the tracking processes that humans use for identifying agents interact with the unique socio-historical contexts that support agent-identification practices. In integrating hypotheses about the history of agents with psychological and epistemological principles regarding agent-identification, the theory can generate novel hypotheses regarding the distinction between recognition-based, heuristic-based, and explanation-based agent-identification. The picture of moral development defended by followers of Aristotle takes moral cultivation to be like playing a harp; one gets to be good by actually spending time playing a real instrument. On this view, we cultivate a virtue by doing the actions associated with that virtue. I argue that this picture is inadequate and must be supplemented by imaginative techniques. One can, and sometimes must, cultivate virtue without actually performing the associated actions. Drawing on strands in Buddhist philosophy, I (...) explain several methods of moral development that rely on imagination and visualization rather than overt action. These techniques are essential in cases where cultivating virtue the way one practices the harp is impossible. In particular, I focus on single-event virtues, first-time virtuous acts, and morally dangerous situations. (shrink)

We present a new proof of soundness/completeness of tableaux with respect to dialogical games in Classical First-Order Logic. As far as we know it is the first thorough result for dialogical games where finiteness of plays is guaranteed by means of what we call repetition ranks.

It is commonly assumed that moral deliberation requires that the alternatives available in a choice situation are evaluatively comparable. This comparability assumption is threatened by claims of incomparability, which is often established by means of the small improvement argument (SIA). In this paper I argue that SIA does not establish incomparability in a stricter sense. The reason is that it fails to distinguish incomparability from a kind of evaluative indeterminacy which may arise due to the vagueness of the evaluative comparatives (...) ‘better than,’ ‘worse than,’ and ‘equally as good as.’. Entré en khâgne pour y devenir traducteur de Virgile et d'Homère, Pierre Magnard reçut de Jean Beaufret l'interpellation de Heidegger, qui fit vaciller ses certitudes et certaine manière d'être chrétien. Ce vacillement le conduisit vers Pascal, dont l'angoisse colore la foi d'une manière inoubliable, lequel Pascal le conduisit à Montaigne, ami de toute une vie. Deux figures en miroir entre lesquelles il lui parut urgent de ne jamais choisir, et auxquelles il consacra beaucoup de son industrie, comme à ces philosophes (...) de la fin de Moyen Age et de la Renaissance que Char eût dit des Matinaux. Un humanisme faisant l'épreuve du néant en l'homme et du silence de Dieu était possible, dont Maître Eckhart et Nicolas de Cues montrent le chemin ; un christianisme aussi, fondé non sur l'usage d'une raison dogmatique mais d'une raison joueuse, laquelle, tout en sachant que c'est le coeur qui lui donne ses principes, se déploiera en toute liberté. Ce livre cherche non point à résoudre une contradiction mais plutôt à développer une inconsistance du système représentatif dans le procès de peindre de Poussin au Caravage et vice versa. Il y sera donc question de mimésis et de fantaisie, d'histoire et d'action, de perspective et de ténèbres, de mort et de décapitation...

In recent years, there have been concerted efforts to ensure that the different components of the international response to crisis-affected countries, whether conducted under the banner of the United Nations or not, are integrated in pursuit of a stated goal of comprehensive, durable, and just resolution of conflict. This includes a drive to purposefully make humanitarian assistance to victims, one of the principal forms of outside involvement in crisis situations, supportive of the “international community's” political ambition. The implication of the (...) coherence agenda is that meeting lifesaving needs is too limited in scope, and that the principles of impartiality, neutrality, and independence that have typically characterized humanitarian action should be set aside in order to harness aid to the “higher” goals of peace, security, and development.
